Perfect Control of the Cable Position in Your CCV Line

Over the past 30 years, Maillefer has delivered and started hundreds of catenary continuous vulcanization (CCV) lines globally. We can confirm that successful cable quality needs a perfect interaction between all the various components in a CCV line. To that end, Maillefer and Sikora GmbH, invented a means for securing the cable quality for both past delivered CCV lines and those to be delivered in the future. They named the device Siccon 600.

Control the cable in the vulcanizing tube

The SICCON 600 is used to determine the exact cable position within the vulcanization tube. It is a component integrated into the production line.

The SICCON 600 is an inductive measuring system. A signal generator feeds current into the winding of a toroidal transformer, mounted at one end of the measuring section. This current creates a magnetic field around the conductor, the intensity of which decreases with increasing radial distance.

The inductive sensors receive the signal at the other end of the measuring section. The bigger the distance between the sensor and conductor, the smaller the received amplitude. When both sensors receive equal amplitude, it indicates that the conductor is in the midst of the sensors (i.e., in the middle of the tube section)

The cable position is shown on the signal receiver and the external display. A mid-position of 0% indicates that the cable is in the middle of the tube part. The cable position is shown at the signal receiver and the external display as a percentage, which represents the deviation from the mid-position or the inside width of the tube part.

The cable position is controlled by the interaction of the pulling caterpillar and the capstan located before the extruder platform. The operators are then able to control the cable position conveniently from the operations room with the help of Maillefer’s Process Supervising Unit (PSU).

Building bricks and maintenance

The SICCON 600 consists of:

  • Signal generator
  • Signal receiver
  • Intermediate tube part with toroidal transformer
  • Intermediate tube part with receiving sensors
  • Connection cables.
Maillefer is pleased to provide spare parts and support for the devices in the market. The unit has shown to be reliable and requires only small maintenance actions to ensure its operation. Troubleshooting is accessible for the maintenance team on-site. The support manual provided has a good list of potential causes for any signal error. A couple of typical service issues we’ve seen include:

  • The connection of the generator control is wrong
  • The toroidal transformer is not correctly isolated
  • The core of the produced cable is pre-isolated, and there is bad grounding at the Pay-off.
