The Key to Excellent Cable Core Roundness

Written by Jorma Leppänen | Jun 1, 2016 4:00:00 AM

Quality control and meeting the product specifications are very important in power cable production. We offer a new method for reliable and error free measurement of cable core roundness and concentricity of medium, high and extra high voltage cable cores. It is our new Cable Roundness Meter CRM 180.

How it works

The Cable Roundness Meter CRM 180 is a stand-alone device for off-line cable sample measurements. The device makes it possible to completely exclude measurement errors as it operates with thick cable samples, conductor included, instead of traditional thinly cut slices without the conductor. Thick samples retain the original geometry and represent the cable shape in subsequent processes like sheathing and cable jointing.

The sample’s conductor is pushed slightly outwards so it can be connected to the jaws of the roundness meter. Measurement done by rotating the sample while simultaneously a high precision laser measures the wall thickness around the cable core. The Cable Roundness Meter is connected to a PC with an in-house analyzing software which calculates the wall thickness, concentricity and roundness of the sample.

Improve your production

The measurement results are examined in fine detail to identify sudden cable geometry errors. The shape of the result reveals the root cause of possible errors. Understanding the reasons for cable geometry errors in your process makes it easier to maintain excellent quality in CV line production.

Process parameter optimization is another important use for the roundness meter. By having an accurate and precise measurement method it is possible to fine tune the extrusion and curing parameters.
The Cable Roundness Meter continues our drive in providing solutions to our customers for producing the highest quality products with maximum material savings.

Benefits of Cable Roundness Meter CRM 180

  • No sample deformation while measuring with the conductor still inside the cable sample
  • Easy to use stand-alone device connected to a PC
  • High precision laser sensor with 5 µm resolution
  • Angular resolution of measurements below 0.1 degree
  • Detailed analysis of geometry errors with in-house software
  • Cable diameters up to 180 mm.
