The shiny new look of the multi-layer PEX / PE-RT extrusion line maybe somewhat past, yet this production line performs even better than the day it was delivered. This is thanks to a serious performance boost provided by our long-time Italian agent, Montenegro S.r.l. The efforts of Michele Riccobene teamed together with Maillefer technicians and customer participation are hitting the mark and beyond.
Boosting line speed 
The customer is Giacomini S.p.A. located in Northern Italy. The extrusion line has a powerful five-layer co-extrusion group that combines just as many layers through a single head. But there was a shortfall. The downstream equipment occupies a relatively small footprint, notably around the trough section. Efficient cooling is essential here to achieve top line speeds. This became a focus for improvement.
Speed expectations were high. Maillefer’s MCD 25 was installed to help overcome the cooling bottleneck. It’s design and high water flow capacity boasts performances which allowed Giacomini to boost cooling capacity beyond what was possible with conventional water trough cooling. Line speeds were increased by over 40%, representing a significant step in upping performance.
Planned performance reviews
Line speed was up. But how to keep it there or improve equipment effectiveness overall? A knowledgeable local representative like Montenegro plays an important role through strong collaboration and response. A plan was set in motion for scheduled Line Performance Reviews over a three-year period.
During a customer site visit, Montenegro spends over two days reviewing the line in operating condition, from extrusion group to coiler. The deliverable is a series of performance, maintenance and spare parts recommendations.
