Flexible vulcanized joints (FVJ) also known as flexible factory joints are typically used in extending delivery lengths of extruded subsea cables. Lengths of XLPE insulated cable core are often limited by the capacity of extrusion, degassing or basket lay-up. Factory joints overcome these constraints.

Two X-ray gauges are used in CV lines to measure thicknesses, concentricity and diameter during production of MV, HV and EHV cables. Now, the second gauge at the cold end (after end seal) is orientable to give a synchronized visual of measurements taken by the first gauge at the hot end.

Maillefer has recently acquired a Cable Checker unit for our new R&D lab. The unit is essentially a microscope connected to a hot oil bath for high resolution analysis of all parts of the cable. This equipment is particularly suited for inspection of extruded XLPE (cross-linkable polyethylene) insulated Medium, High and/or Extra-High Voltage cable samples. Both trouble shooting and quality control inspection are done with very high accuracy.
