Joint connections in any cable system are crucial. Depending on the kind of application and the resulting lengths produced, different joint types are required.

Flexible vulcanized joints (FVJ) also known as flexible factory joints are typically used in extending delivery lengths of extruded subsea cables. Lengths of XLPE insulated cable core are often limited by the capacity of extrusion, degassing or basket lay-up. Factory joints overcome these constraints.

Maillefer has recently acquired a Cable Checker unit for our new R&D lab. The unit is essentially a microscope connected to a hot oil bath for high resolution analysis of all parts of the cable. This equipment is particularly suited for inspection of extruded XLPE (cross-linkable polyethylene) insulated Medium, High and/or Extra-High Voltage cable samples. Both trouble shooting and quality control inspection are done with very high accuracy.

Since the early times of extruded high voltage subsea XLPE insulated cables, it has been mandatory to develop reliable in-house solutions for jointing either XLPE or lead extrusion lengths. The manufacturing lengths are connected by so called Factory Vulcanized Joints (FVJ). The factory joints make it possible to proceed with the application of subsequent cable layers in processes not sensitive to restarts after a break.

Our new triple crosshead THX 70/150LR has been developed to enable longer production runs by improved material flow and temperature control. The key improvements compared to our standard triple crosshead are shorter material residence time, minimized stagnation risks, increased water tempered area, and improved distribution. The crosshead is part of the Long Run Value Package.

Cable breakdown can cost you your customer. This is especially true for demanding applications, such as high and extra high voltage underground and submarine cables. The most common reason for a cable breakdown is impurities in the XLPE insulation, which is one of the main raw material for this type of cables. To put it in short, the purer the material, the lower the risk of a breakdown.
